This time more pictures, less text 🙂
We have been talking a lot about Indonesia and its land beauties. But in our opinion, the best of Indonesia is underwater.
As mentioned, we are not divers, but just very enthusiastic snorkelers. We think that you just need some practice to get 10 meters deep. You can see a lot even if you just put your head in the water without free diving. Experiences are not necessary, so you have no excuse not to try 🙂
Until now, we saw the underwater world in Australia (Great Barrier Reef), Thailand, Malaysia (Sipadan), Maldives, etc. and Indonesia can compete with all of them. Especially Komodo National Park’s waters are clean and very diversified. It’s supposed to be one of the best diving and snorkeling destinations in the world! We’ll let our pictures tell you the story:
Besides thousands of fish, we also saw sea turtles (three of them). In Indonesia (especially Gilli islands) they are oriented into reestablishing sea turtles in their waters, so they are collecting eggs, growing youngsters and releasing them back into the sea. The effect can be easily seen, since the water around Gili islands are again full of turtles.
One of the places, we loved the most, is Pink beach on Komodo island (we didn’t see any komodo dragons swimming, thankfully). From far it looks like an ordinary sandy beach, but when you get to shore, you really see pink sand. It’s one of the only seven pink beaches in the world!
You can go snorkeling or diving from Labuan Bajo (Flores) on a day trip. If that’s not enough, try booking a liveaboard vessel or a trip from Flores to Lombok, which stop on many snorkeling spots. We tried the later and not only the underwater world, but also the deserted little islands amazed us!
So if you are ever in Indonesia, grab your gear and go look beyond the surface!
